Planar Systems says it has developed a revolutionary display technology based on the popular electroluminescent (EL) displays currently used in medical, industrial, and transpor- tation applications worldwide. In addition to working closely with system designers in several industries to demonstrate applications that use transparent EL, Planar is also looking for other ideas on how this new technology can be used.
The company has posted a website at www.planar.com to gather concepts and suggestions. It will select one entry to receive a US$500 grand prize and ten second-place US$50 prizes.
Transparent EL will open up a new range of applications for graphic displays. Says Planar: "Imagine showing data on a display screen and simultaneously viewing gauges or other information through it. All this is now possible with these transparent EL displays. They are not only transparent, but also feature all the proven environmental characteristics typical of Planar EL displays. Most importantly, they have that unique Planar EL look: image quality, high brightness, and a virtually unlimited viewing angle. The display will cost at least US$100, is dimmable and can display text, fixed symbols or full graphics in sizes up to 10" diagonal."
Prizes will be awarded on 1 October 2000. See their website on www.planar.com for details.
