Internet-ready demonstration board fro PIC MCUs

1 March 2000 DSP, Micros & Memory

Microchip's PICDEM-2 demonstration board provides Internet-ready capability for PIC16CXXX 8 bit RISC microcontrollers. PICDEM-2 incorporates emWare's EMIT evaluation software which allows PIC16CXXX-based systems to be accessed, monitored and controlled remotely over the Internet using a web browser, PDA, spreadsheet, custom application or database. The development system includes a demonstration board, product samples, complete documentation and tutorial application code for building a networked application. Existing PICDEM-2 owners can upgrade their systems with Internet-ready capability with a special kit available from Microchip at a nominal cost.

Internet-ready capability is provided by emWare's EMIT device-networking solution on a low-cost 8 bit microcontroller. At the core of emWare's EMIT distributed networking architecture is emMicro, a tiny device object server. The emMicro networking software resides on the microcontroller or microprocessor of the device and works in conjunction with emGateway, which bridges large, conventional networks such as LANs, WANs, intranets and the Internet, to lightweight device networks such as RS232, RS485, IR, RF and Ethernet.

Standard Internet technologies, including Java and HTTP, are supported through emGateway. The interface can be a web browser using JavaBean objects, a spreadsheet using ActiveX or a PDA, telephone, database or custom application. Microchip also plans to offer Internet-ready PICDEM kits for other PICmicro families.
