To help original equipment manufacturers reduce the number of system components of PC peripheral devices, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is offering its newest Flash microcontroller with integrated universal serial bus (USB) and radio frequency (RF) capabilities. The 8-bit 68HC908JB16 is designed specifically for products such as keyboards, mice, RF wireless receivers, USB converters, and USB security keys.
"While most PC peripherals today are wired, consumers are quickly recognising the advantages of using wireless PC peripherals, which include portability and flexibility in placement," said Paul Grimme, vice president of Motorola's 8/16-Bit Products Division. "Market adoption of these products is expected to increase when the prices start to come down. By integrating onto a single chip what would have been handled by multiple chips in the past, Motorola is offering system designers of both wired and wireless PC peripherals an effective way to reduce the number of system components."
Adoption of wireless PC peripherals has been slow due to price points, compatibility issues with serial communication interfaces, and RF interference problems that occur between various wireless devices used in the same vicinity. The 68HC908JB16 is Motorola's first 8-bit MCU to offer dual phase locked loop (PLL) clock generators for 27 MHz RF transmissions used in wireless PC peripherals. The dual-PLL design also allows two channels to receive signals simultaneously, from a keyboard and mouse for instance, and offers optimal channel-to-channel RF interference rejection.
