Literature on RFID access control opens new doors in design

26 February 2003 News

Texas Instruments has produced a useful new literature pack to support the recent launch of its new RFID (radio frequency identification) vicinity badges and readers for access control. Aimed at access control manufacturers, integrators and end users, the literature includes a brochure and datasheets on their full range of access control products all designed to meet the latest ISO 15693 worldwide standards for 13,56 MHz vicinity card systems.

The brochure - 'TI-RFid is opening new doors in access control' - explains how TI has applied its 13,56 MHz RFid expertise to produce a new range of cost effective access control badges and readers with highly secure encryption and the capability to include biometrics such as fingerprint identification if required. Separate data sheets provide full specifications for each product.

The literature explains how TI's 13,56 MHz RFid technology results in a longer read range than conventional vicinity tags with the additional advantage of 2000 bits of data storage that can be re-written or updated as required. The large data storage allows storage of personnel data on the card with advanced security encryption and biometrics plus on-the-fly re-programming. Storing biometric and access control or personal data on the card itself eliminates the need for host computers or complex networks with central databases with all their security implications and administrative problems.

The brochure explains how readers can be linked to payment or transaction processing systems. Multiple badges can be identified simultaneously for higher throughput and less delay in busy environments. The readers are compatible with various interfaces including the industry standard Weigand and RS-485 standards for extended data transmission up to 1,2 km.

TI's entire range of RFid products now includes low frequency transponders and readers, high frequency 13,56 MHz smart labels and readers, and evaluation kits etc, for a wide range of applications such as access control, warehouse and supply chain logistics, product tracking, asset tracking, vehicle security, and cashless payments in retail systems.
