Small 16-bit micro for low power applications offers high memory integration

12 March 2003 DSP, Micros & Memory

Hitachi's low-power 16-bit microcontroller with high memory integration including 384 KB of embedded Flash and 32 K RAM is targeted for use in portable digital audio, video and communication devices. The H8S/2239F is also suitable for ISDN equipment and industrial applications such as gas-water-electricity metering, sensors, or portable medical applications such as blood pressure and blood sugar meters.

Multichip systems require much more board space and usually consume considerably more power than comparable single-chip systems. Integrating large memories on-chip helps reduce both space and power consumption. Therefore, as many low power applications also have tough space constraints, the H8S/2239F is ideal for ultra-compact, low-power, quick-to-assemble and highly reliable systems.

The microcontroller typically uses 30 mA at its full clock speed of 20 MHz and at 3 V but it has a specified minimum clock of 2 MHz where it consumes only 4 mA. This can be further improved by turning off unused modules. The microcontroller's efficient H8S CPU enables the chip's 20 MHz clock to yield up to 16 native MIPS peak performance or about 8 MIPS Dhrystone. Other low-power features include a 32 KHz subclock and the low power modes associated with that.

The H8S/2239F is available in three different 100-pin package options, a low cost QFP and two TQFPs, one of which is a very compact 0,4 mm pin pitch package that measures just 12 x 12 mm.
