LDO linear regulators 'world's smallest'

26 March 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

The MAX8530/MAX8531/MAX8532 from Maxim are claimed to be the world's smallest, low-noise, low-dropout (LDO) linear regulators. Overall solution size is 80% smaller than industry standard, making them ideal for low-noise, space-sensitive applications. Package area is 1,8 mm2 in a 6-bump UCSP (1,63 x 1,12 mm) versus the industry's closest - a 9 mm2 MFL package. The MAX8530/1 are dual linear regulators and the MAX8532 is a single linear regulator. All have preset output voltage combinations between 1,5 V and 3,3 V with 1% output accuracy. MAX8531 offers low-noise performance: only 40 µV root-mean-square output noise and up to 60 dB PSRR. MAX8530 incorporates both a 200 mA LDO and 150 mA LDO with a 140 ms timed reset and only 130 µA ground current for two outputs. To maximise battery life the devices feature 100 mV of dropout at 100 mA and less than 1 µA of shutdown current. All provide thermal-overload and short-circuit protection, and have an input voltage range from 2,5 to 6,5 V.
