Solution to battery theft from cell towers

30 June 2020 Power Electronics / Power Management

In South Africa and other parts of the world, the theft of batteries from communications infrastructure sites costs the operators millions of dollars every year. Many solutions have been implemented with extraordinarily little success.

Power Extreme Technologies, with its patented AfriStreme55-Supreme, fully IoT-enabled battery, believes it is set to change this phenomenon.

The AfriStreme55-Supreme has a built-in battery management system and microprocessor to control all the functions of the battery. With its IoT-enabled systems, the AfriStreme55-Supreme delivers performance data to the cloud on a constant basis. This feature enables the owner of the batteries to have an unobscured view of the battery status and performance over time. Integrated into the management system is a full track-and-trace capability that will enable the recovery of the batteries in case they are illegally removed from any installation.

The AfriStreme55-Supreme battery implements LTO (lithium titanate oxide) technology to enable it to outlast and outperform almost any existing battery technology in the market today. The

25 000-charge cycle capability of the LTO technology used in the AfriStreme55-Supreme should give a lifespan of more than 10 years, saving the networks on the regular replacement costs associated with current battery technologies.

With its fast charge capabilities, the implementation of the AfriStreme55-Supreme will deliver a full load capability every time, even when numerous load shedding cycles are experienced. This feature will ensure more uptime for the sites that will result in more income generated for the networks.
