Rugged and reliable connector system

26 April 2023 Interconnection

Cutting edge data rates are well documented with 56 and 112 Gbps PAM4 in operation, and 224 Gbps PAM4 currently being verified. However, most customers do not require data rates in that vicinity. What is required is a reliable and robust connector system capable of 10 Gbps or less. Samtec’s Q-Strip products fit this scenario perfectly.

Firstly, the Q-Strip provides a high-speed connection. A mated QSH, QTH system, at 5 mm stack height, is rated to 10 Gbps NRZ.

Secondly, the product has an integral ground plane, with surface mount ground planes positioned between the two rows of signal pins providing improved electrical performance. The ground plane can also be used as a power plane, with each ground plane being able to handle 23 to 25 A, depending on the series.

The ground plane and connector tails are all SMT. This saves PCB real estate by eliminating plated through-holes, and it simplifies manufacturing by removing the through-hole processing step.

These rugged connectors are tested to rigorous standards which evaluate contact resistance in simulated field conditions, allowing them to achieve high mating cycles of between 250 and 2500.
