Company profile: Technique Electronics

25 July 2007 News

Technique Electronics is a privately owned company that was founded in 1989. The company is owned and managed by Neville Hart and Bryan Hart, a father and son team of qualified electrical engineers with diverse experience and over 40 years of management, production and design experience.

The company currently employs approximately 50 people, with the manufacturing plant and head office located in Roodeport. Today, the company stands at the forefront of electronics manufacturing technology, having recently upgraded its SMD line to an I-Pulse M4E machine with a placement capability of 0201 components, 54 mm x 54 mm QFP down to 0,28 pitch, BGA and micro-BGA. All production is supported by an in-house quality management system certified to Dekra ISO 9000.

The company has two distinct lines of business: contact manufacturing and in-house product manufacturing.

Contract manufacturing

In contract manufacturing where the customer is king, the company has had to maintain high levels of flexibility and can offer customers a number of options, from small to large production runs, kitting to in-house procurement or partial kit procurement. The other service offerings for contract work are:

* Hand through-hole assembly.

* Wave soldering and conformal coating.

* Mechanical and electromechanical final assembly.

* Quality control.

* Testing.

* Bar-coding/tracking info.

* Bill Of Material/Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) capability.

The company says that it takes a strong interest in the products that it manufactures for its customers, and has on a number of occasions been involved in cost reduction and redesign of products for its customers.

The company is also currently accessing an upgrade to its current materials handling and accounting systems with Compiere, which is sitting at number 3 in the ERP world behind SAP and Oracle. Compiere is an open source product that has come out of nowhere in the last seven years and is now challenging the big players. Technique Electronics believes this system will allow it to offer its customers and suppliers unprecedented Web access to account information, orders, order status and even secure product purchasing and payment capability.

In-house product manufacturing

Technique Electronics designs and manufactures all of its own products. The company currently specialises in low energy and alternative energy products. Its design capabilities are focused on power supplies, chargers, lightning protection, optical solid-state lighting and RF design up to UHF. The full design process is supported, from conceptualisation, SPICE modelling, prototyping, PCB file generation and mechanical CAD design, through to full production. The company's current product lines are:

* Solid state automotive lighting.

* Domestic solid state lighting.

* Municipal solid state lighting.

* DC/DC constant current modules.

* AC/DC constant current modules.

* Solar water heating control systems.

* Micro geyser power controllers.

* Solar chargers and battery management systems.

* UHF Keeloq transmitters/receivers (under development).

* Magnetically coupled DC high pressure water pumps.

For all large-scale solar installations the company offers a full project management solution from sizing, ROI (return on investment), payback period studies, EROEI (energy returned on energy invested) indications and equipment selection (whether it be manufactured by Technique or purchased from strategic suppliers), through to logistics, commissioning and testing. All of the municipal and government work is marketed and sold through Okhela Solar Energy, of which Technique has a 20% stake.
