Smart Wi-Fi solution for public transport

With technology evolving at an exponential rate and the increasing demand for better living standards, smart bus solutions have become a new way forward for the transportation industry since public transport is one of the key drivers of the economy. Smart bus solutions will add significant benefits such as vehicle monitoring, GPS location services and passenger surveillance cameras. Bus and taxi companies are therefore on the lookout for reliable Wi-Fi solutions that can provide free or prepaid Wi-Fi hotspot services in vehicles. This type of application will prove to be popular in smart cities and smart transportation.

The WLink Bus Wi-Fi solution provides passengers with an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot to check email, surf the Internet and enjoy digital entertainment during their journey. The service works like a fixed hotspot. The WLink Bus Wi-Fi solution comprises three parts, namely:

• WLink Industrial Router: Currently available as an HSPA or LTE device, with a 5G model due to be launched soon.

• Wi-Fi Captive Portal: The landing page of newly connected Wi-Fi users, Captive Portal is a customisable page which displays a welcome message and the conditions of access. It may require the user to log in depending on the initial setup.

• WLink Bus Wi-Fi Management Platform: Free platform for monitoring and remotely managing routers. The platform can upgrade firmware remotely, schedule a reboot, update configuration files, etc.

The advantage of using the WLink router in the transport space is that it is not only limited to hotspots – the same router can be used for surveillance cameras in buses or taxis. The cameras can connect via a LAN cable or over Wi-Fi. This is done so that the transport operator can also connect remotely to the cameras for security purposes, in the event of a crime or an accident. Through the utilisation of a WLink router, transport operators can monitor onboard passengers, effortlessly track the real-time status of buses/taxis to ensure the safety of each passenger and improve their overall travelling experience.
