Hittite has launched what is believed to be the industry’s first programmable harmonic low-pass filter (LPF).
The HMC1044LP3E is ideally suited for cellular multi-standard, multi-carrier designs based on quadrature modulators and demodulators, for wideband signal generators for instrumentation and test equipment, and for all other wideband communications, automotive and industrial applications where harmonic filtering is required.
The IC features 16 programmable settings to select a bandwidth between 1 and 3 GHz. The bandwidth can be dynamically updated via a serial interface to effectively track the target operating frequency over a wide bandwidth.
Optimal system performance can be achieved by configuring the HMC1044LP3E for maximum suppression of the 2nd, 3rd or all harmonics. The small 3 x 3 mm footprint yields area savings over existing filtering solutions which often require switched filters or banded versions of the product.
An ideal application for the HMC1044LP3E is in wideband cellular transceivers using quadrature modulators and demodulators. Modulators and demodulators typically employ a filter network to create the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components at either the fundamental (1 x LO) or at two times (2 x LO) the local oscillator frequency; the 1 x LO types are particularly sensitive to LO 3rd harmonic levels, while the 2 x LO types are more sensitive to 2nd harmonic levels.
High LO harmonics cause amplitude and phase mismatches which degrade modulator sideband rejection and demodulator image rejection performance. The HMC1044LP3E is designed to ensure that 2nd and 3rd harmonics of the LO are kept below -20 dBc across the operating band.
In test instrumentation applications such as wideband signal generators, the device can be used to improve the harmonic content of the wideband source, and can replace traditional switched filter banks.
