Multimedia accessories for Raspberry Pi

7 August 2013 Computer/Embedded Technology

Element 14 has released two new accessories for the Raspberry Pi embedded computing platform – a camera board for security and VoIP projects as well as image and video capture, and an XBMC bundle which can turn the Pi into a low-cost media centre for home or office.

The camera board is a custom designed add-on which attaches to one of the small sockets on the Pi’s upper surface. This interface uses the dedicated CSi interface, designed especially for interfacing to cameras. The camera board itself is tiny, at around 25 x 20 x 9 mm.

The camera’s 5 megapixel native resolution sensor is capable of taking 2592 x 1944 pixel static images and 1080p30 720p60 and 640x480p60/90 video. It is supported in the latest version of Raspbian, Raspberry Pi’s preferred operating system.

The XBMC bundle contains all the hardware and software necessary to allow users to stream content from devices on their home network through their Pi, turning the screen or their TV into a media centre. The board will then stream content from any computer on the local network. Users can also access their Xbox Live ID to recommend content.

The XBMC bundle includes an SD card pre-loaded with Raspbmc software, an open source Linux distribution that brings Xbox Media Centre (XBMC) to the Raspberry Pi. To help users get started quickly and easily, a straightforward user guide featuring an online video tutorial is included.

To control the Raspberry Pi in XBMC mode, the bundle includes a mini keyboard and integrated mouse pad that wirelessly connects to the Raspberry Pi, while HDMI and Ethernet cables are provided to connect to a TV or monitor and the Internet.
