Embedded Linux for Raspberry Pi

22 March 2017 Computer/Embedded Technology

Keystone Electronic Solutions has made Guinnux – the company’s own Linux-based distribution – available as a Raspberry Pi NOOBS operating system image.

Unlike other NOOBS images, Keystone’s version ships with the Guinnux fallback rescue system, which is then used to download and install the base Guinnux packages. This greatly reduces download and install time.

As an operating system, Guinnux delivers improved ease-of-use, enhanced features and robust performance. The distribution is now based on the Arch Linux ARM distribution merged with Keystone components, providing enterprise resilience and capabilities as standard. The rescue file system, which co-exists with the NOOBS image on the SD card, allows users to recover or re-install a damaged or broken Guinnux installation without the need to re-flash the complete SD card image.

Guinnux also allows for further development of custom solutions on top of the base system. By using the Guinnux build system, developers are able to develop new embedded software in a way similar to proven Linux server application development. John Eigelaar, Keystone Electronic Solution’s founder and Guinnux developer, commented, “The Raspberry Pi is one of the most popular boards today. We ported our own Linux distribution, Guinnux, to the Raspberry Pi in order to showcase its capabilities to the wider Linux user base.”
