Webb’s MIMO antennas approved for local trains

Webb Industries has received a large order for a range of its new, low-profile, rugged TRD450 MIMO TRD antennas to be fitted to South African passenger trains.
The TRD450 MIMO uses the current basic Webb TRD design that it manufactures for local rolling stock and extends it to include two GSM/Wi-Fi radiators – multi-in and multi-out (MIMO) – which can operate simultaneously. “This feature enables significantly faster data transmission,” says Webb engineer Terry Reuss.
As a result of a foreign company – one of the biggest in the world – being responsible for the supply of the railway equipment and technology transfer, Webb needed to successfully pass international standards audits in order to qualify as an official supplier to the project. “Completing the successful design of the antenna and going through the process of becoming an accredited supplier has been a long-term yet most successful project,” Reuss says.
Demonstrating Webb’s success in designing multiband antennas, the TRD450 MIMO antenna covers the following frequency bands: GSM 900 and 1800; LTE; UMTS; 2,4 GHz; 5,3 GHz; 5,8 GHz; GPS and UHF. The wide frequency spectrum and multi radiation (GSM) in one antenna makes the TRD450 MIMO antenna unique.
From a physical design perspective, the TRD450 MIMO antenna is similar in shape to the older antennas but slightly longer due to the MIMO antennas. The high-impact cover makes it ideal for harsh environments.
