Digi's new acquisition opens thin client servers to midmarket

The economies of scale resulting from Digi's mid-June acquisition of Decision Europe, a French designer and manufacturer of data communications systems, means thin client device servers will soon become available to market sectors which could previously not cost-justify high-end products.
"Digi's acquisition of Decision Europe will ensure that its expertise and skill sets will be translated into a broadening of the product range and the increasing affordability of solutions previously out of reach to all but the top corporate clients," says Dave Shepherdson, CEO of SPS South Africa, which represents Digi locally.
Digi International already owns 62% of the Connectware global market, and the Decision Europe acquisition follows the buyout of US-based IO Networks to incorporate radio and USB connectivity in the range of Digi products.
"Digi International has re-emphasised its leadership position, locally and internationally, in terms of connection to peripheral devices regardless of whether they are wireless, USB, RS232 or Ethernet," Shepherdson says.
Decision Europe is a seven-year-old company focused on thin client technology, with clients including IBM, Black Box Europe, Nestlé, Sanyo, France Telecom, Alcatel and Schneider Electric. Its products are sold under the XCell Technology brand. Decision Europe's single-port, two-port and four-port Thin Device Server products will augment the Digi Terminal Server family, says the company, and Digi will also benefit from Decision Europe's expertise in vertical markets such as industrial automation.
