High pin-count PICmicros now include 32 KB Flash memory devices

2 July 2003 DSP, Micros & Memory

Microchip Technology has added a 32 KB memory option to its 64- and 80-pin TQFP PIC18F Flash microcontroller family. Ideally suited for applications requiring a large memory, these microcontrollers offer added I/O, timers, a feature-rich peripheral set and the flexibility of field self-programmability. In addition, using its PEEC Flash process technology, Microchip says the new PIC18F6520 and PIC18F8520 micro-controllers provide best-in-class erase/write endurance, retention, and disturb reliability for both program memory and on-chip data EEPROM.

These microcontrollers are code-compatible with the company's PIC18F452, offering a higher pincount migration part, and also with the PIC18F8720 Flash devices, offering a pin-compatible, lower cost migration part. In addition, they offer users of the one-time programmable PIC17C7XX devices the opportunity to migrate to a microcontroller that features the same peripheral and connectivity options but offers the flexibility of reprogrammable Flash memory.

The PIC18F6520 and PIC18F8520 have an operating voltage range of 2,0-5,5 V and feature 32 KB of Flash memory, 2 KB of RAM and 1024 B of high endurance EEPROM data memory. Peripherals include an analog-to-digital converter with up to 16 channels x 10-bit resolution, five capture/compare/PWM modules, up to 10 MIPS performance at 10 MHz, two 8-bit timers, three 16-bit timers and one watch-dog timer, dual analog comparators and a parallel slave port. Serial I/O features include SPI, I2C, and two addressable USART modules supporting RS485 and RS232.

First demo board for PIC18Fs

Microchip has also released its first demonstration board designed for its high pin-count PIC18F Flash microcontrollers. Fully functional right out of the box, the PIC18FXX20 64/80L TQFP demo board demonstrates the digital and analog peripherals of the PIC18FXX20 microcontrollers and allows for rapid and easy prototyping without the need to design a printed circuit board to support the included PIC18F8720 Flash microcontroller.

The demo board offers digital features that include an RS232 Serial Port, ICD connection, 8 x LED for diagnostic tests, crystal clock circuit (RC option), and reset and user buttons. Analog features include potentiometer input to an ADC input channel and a sample of Microchip's TC74 temperature sensor. Outfitted with a PIC18F8720 Flash microcontroller, it also complements Microchip's MPLAB in-circuit debugger (ICD) 2 tool - a powerful run-time tool that offers cost-effective in-circuit Flash programming and debugging from the graphical user interface of the MPLAB integrated development environment (IDE) tool.
