USB on-the-go power support ICs

2 July 2003 Power Electronics / Power Management

Maxim's USB On-The-Go (OTG) power plus support ICs, the MAX3353E/MAX3355E, are suited for portable equipment such as cellular phones, PDAs, and digital cameras. These devices are used in conjunction with dual-role USB controllers that contain host and peripheral functionality along with a USB transceiver. They provide the 5 V VBUS power and support for dual-role controllers required by USB OTG applications. The internal charge pump creates a VBUS output from a Vcc input between 2,6 and 5,5 V that is USB OTG compliant. Internal comparators detect VBUS voltage levels used for Host Negotiation Protocol and Session Request Protocol. The MAX3353E stores this information in registers accessible with an I2C interface. The D+, D-, VBUS, and ID_IN pins are ±15 kV ESD protected, eliminating the need for external protection structures. The devices come in chip-scale (UCSP) and TSSOP packages rated for -40 to +85°C. UCSP requires only 5,16 mm2 of board space.
