As a major supplier of connection technologies for severe environments, Souriau has developed a wide range of fibre-optic solutions, using the Elio contact. These solutions are designed specifically to be: easy to clean, easy to install, and easy to wire.
To design this concept, Souriau, which invests 6% of its sales revenue in new product development, established a strong partnership with a leading aircraft manufacturer. As such it has developed the system in conjunction with a prime user. The shape, material, size and performances were thoroughly studied to comply with harsh environmental requirements. Souriau's optical contact is now considered a technology leader in easy to clean, easy to install and easy to wire optical contacts within the market sector.
Among its most important features, Elio incorporates an hermaphroditic optical contact which is easy to mount and dismount without any tool, due to its patented boot technology. It has a spring-loaded contact with ceramic ST ferrule of 2,5 mm diameter. The contact size equivalent to a gauge 16 contact and it has an anti-rotation system. Rear sealing is by a flexible boot grommet and it is fully compatible with loose and tight structure cable.
Suitable for singlemode, multimode and plastic optical fibres, it is easy to clean without removing the contact from the connector. Elio contacts can be fitted into standard Aeromil connectors such as ARINC 600, ARINC 700, and MIL-DTL-38999. Key specs are: Typical IL at 1300 nm : IL <0,2 dB for 62.5/125 fibre; IL <0,3 dB for 9/125 fibre for any connector (ARINC 600, ARINC 404, MIL-C-38999, NAS1599). Operating temperature: -65 to +125°C long term, and +150°C short term.
With a background in airborne applications, the Elio design is suited for use in any other harsh environment, such as onboard ships and submarines - Elio is qualified for National Navy, on tanks for army use as well as in Formula 1 cars. The range can be used wherever robustness, high performances and easy maintenance are needed.
