Filterless 15 W class-D audio amplifier

21 April 2004 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim claims its 15 W, mono, filterless, Class-D audio amplifier, the MAX9703, offers the audio quality typically associated with linear (Class-AB) amps and the benefits of high-efficiency Class-D operation, eliminating the need for bulky, expensive heat sinking. It uses its patented spread-spectrum modulation scheme which reduces EMI emissions by up to 6 dB, and is targeted for use in thin-profile applications such as flat-panel TVs and flat-screen PC monitors. The MAX9703 offers 0,07% THD + N, high PSRR of 80 dB at 1 kHz, and operates from a 10 V to 25 V single supply. Offered in 32-pin QFN it can produce up to 15 W of average power and 20 W of peak power into an 8 ohm load. Differential inputs and four selectable-gain options allow for optimising the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio under different load and input-level conditions. Four flexible clocking options control the noise spectrum for a given application.
