Managed switch eases troubleshooting while operating over wide temperature range

16 June 2004 Computer/Embedded Technology

Contemporary Controls has introduced a new version of its EISX switches in the CTRLink family that provides management functionality in conditions where outdoor temperatures (wide-ranging) are expected.

Network management becomes increasingly important in an outdoor scenario because in many instances the location of the switch or switches may not be nearby, making troubleshooting difficult. With the Ethernet EISX8M managed switch, the user can remotely diagnose the network and restore service. It offers eight 10/100Base-TX twisted-pair ports while supporting SNMP.

Equipped with the conventional features common in standard plug and play switches such as auto-negotiation, half- or full-duplex operation and flow control, the EISX8M is designed with features such as VLAN, trunking, quality of service (QoS) and a programmable fault relay that can be connected to a supervisory system. Individual port parameters can be set via a console port attached to a terminal emulation program, allowing for custom configuration.

These features provide high reliability when deployed in various applications:

* VLAN - blocks communication from one VLAN to another despite the fact that they are located on the same switch.

* Trunking - A unique feature that provides additional bandwidth between two interconnected switches depending on the number of interconnected ports as well as redundancy.

* QoS - provides priority to messages received by the switch.

* Programmable fault relay - this switch will monitor the link status of all ports and activate the relay based on the user configuration.

The EISX8M switch provides simple to use menu-based configuration, and only standard straight-through cables are needed to connect copper ports to NIMs or another hub. Eight 'normal' (MDI/X) ports are available on the EISX8M-100T for attaching local devices, but the eighth port also offers an 'uplink' (MDI) jack to be used for cascading to another hub without the need of a crossover cable. This switch is shipped with a DIN-rail clip for installation.
