Microchip has introduced eight 28- and 40/44-pin PIC Flash microcontrollers targeting high-end applications requiring additional memory in low pincounts, featuring 48 or 64 KB of Flash program memory and 4 KB of RAM. Example applications for these devices include: industrial (TCP/IP controllers, motor control; ballast control); computing (cable modems, POS terminals, voice/fax boards); telecommunications (GPS units); and consumer (MP3 players, security systems, thermostats).
Microchip has also released four 64- and 80-pin PIC Flash microcontrollers targeting cost-constrained applications requiring additional I/O. They offer up to 70 pins of I/O, and feature 8- or 16 KB of Flash program memory and 768 bytes of RAM. Example applications that could benefit from increased I/O include: building security systems, appliance controls, video control panels, home automation systems, and data collection from multiple sensors.
The new microcontrollers offer Standard Flash or Enhanced Flash. The Enhanced Flash products (PIC18F2525, PIC18F2620, PIC18F4525 and PIC18F4620) have self-programming capability, and up to 1 KB of high-endurance EEPROM data memory.
Additional features include:
* External clock of up to 40 MHz (10 MIPS).
* 32 kHz to 32 MHz (8 MIPS) internal oscillator.
* Fail-safe clock monitor.
* Wide voltage range (2-5,5 V), and a -40 to +125°C temperature range.
* In-circuit serial programming.
* 10-bit, 100 kSps ADC with up to 13 signal channels.
* Two analog comparators.
* Programmable brownout and low-voltage detect.
* SPI, I2C and one or two USARTs (supporting RS485, RS232 and LIN).
* Two or three capture compare PWM (CCP) modules.
The PIC18F microcontrollers are supported by the MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE), MPLAB C18 C Compiler, MPLAB ICD 2 In-Circuit Debugger, and MPLAB ICE 2000 In-Circuit Emulator.
