Delta Light and Electronics, Denmark, is among Europe's leading international test, design, service, consulting and education organisations in the field of electronics, software technology, optics and acoustics. Delta's staff of 270 employees - of which more than one half holds academic degrees - service customers in more than 20 countries from eight accredited laboratories in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Delta Light and Electronics has begun serial production of its fermentation processing control unit, BioView, which uses the MIP520 PC/104 module from MPL. This unit is based on Delta's patented process-control procedure that can control the fermentation process without the need for external measurements that run the risk of contaminating the fermentation process during the measurement procedure.
The BioView sensor is a multichannel fluorescence detection system for application in biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical industry, food production and environmental monitoring. It detects specific trace compounds and the state of micro-organisms as well as their chemical environment without interfering with the sample. Its key features include: non-invasive monitoring; high sensitivity; rugged housing; single ended measurement.
The MIP520 PC/104 module was chosen because of size and other characteristics, such as being able to withstand the substantial g-forces inherent in the production process itself. The low power consumption was another key issue and the high MTBF value. The possibility to easily mount Flash disks was a further important consideration in the selection of the MIP520, as well as the professional Linux support from MPL.
