Nonvolatile port expander integrates a user-EEPROM

20 October 2004 DSP, Micros & Memory Security Services & Risk Management

The DS4520 is Dallas Semiconductor's new 9-bit nonvolatile (NV) port expander plus memory, that offers users a programmable alternative to the hardware jumpers and mechanical switches used to control digital logic nodes. The states of the nine I/Os and the 64-byte user EEPROM are programmed over an addressable I²C-compatible serial interface. The device offers three address pins, allowing up to 72 I/Os to be controlled/sensed independently over a single I²C bus. With I/O states stored in NV memory, typical applications include setting FPGA/ASIC configurations/profiles or selecting boot flash in RAID systems, servers/workstations, base stations, and industrial controls. The 2,7 to 5,5 V supply range DS4520 comes in 16-pin TSSOP package and can operate over -40 to +85°C.
