Infineon Technologies and Global Locate are jointly developing single-chip assisted global positioning system (A-GPS) receiver for mobile telephones, smartphones and PDAs. Called Hammerhead, the chip (PMB2520) incorporates RF and baseband GPS functionality enabling emergency assistance and location-based services. It is claimed to be able to detect a GPS signal 1000 times weaker than the normal 'open sky' signal outdoors. The design, optimised for mobile handsets, includes Global Locate's IndoorGPS technology for operation in deep urban canyons, in moving vehicles and indoors. The 7 x 7 mm PMB2520 supports mobile station-assisted (MS-A), mobile station-based (MS-B), autonomous and enhanced tracking modes. Sensitivity is -161 dBm. Unique architecture means it does not require additional RAM or ROM. It will be offered in a standard VQFN-48 green package, a very thin QFP non-leaded chip package with 48 pins.
