Local electronics company develops simple-to-use PCI interface

8 November 2000 Programmable Logic

ASIC Design Services (ADS) has developed a PCI interface that it says is low-cost and easy-to-use.

"PCILite was born out of the requirement for a simple PCI interface" says Tony Dal Maso, CEO of ASIC Design Services, "ADS have been working closely with customers over the last year and identified a common requirement for an easy-to-use PCI interface. PCILite is made even more attractive with pricing as low as US$10 in high volume."

"PCILite is simply a Target without DMA." explains Willem Oosthuizen, Head of Development for ADS. "This simple solution allows old ISA card designs to be converted to PCI, requiring minimum effort from the designer. PCILite has an Intel-like microprocessor back end interface. Simple read/write and chip-select signals are provided and the duration of these signals is software-programmable. A user address and data bus connects peripherals, and there are additional user-definable pins that can act as either inputs or outputs or can be programmed to be chip-selects. PCILite is available in an 8, 16 or 32 bit version."

"The smallest package/footprint for PCILite is a standard 100 pin TQFP package with dimensions of only 16 x 16 mm. This saves space on the card for the user's other requirements" added Oosthuizen, "Because of the simplicity of PCILite, a PCI application can be developed in a very short space of time."

"For customers requiring something more than a PCI Target, we offer PCILite. PCI functions such as Master and DMA controller, plus user specific logic functionality, such as glue logic and FIFO interfaces, can be implemented in a single PCILite device providing additional logic integration benefits", concludes Dal Maso.
