Power controller offers new efficiency and flexibility

8 November 2000 Power Electronics / Power Management

Philips Semiconductors' STARplug, a new family of switched mode power supply (SMPS) ICs that operate directly from a rectified mains supply, are rated to supply up to 30 W at global mains power.

According to the company, the family name, STARplug, summarises the values contained within the IC products that the range will comprise: these include (S) saving the environment, (T) turnkey design solutions to improve development speed and reduce time to market, (A) adaptable to any voltage and (R) reliability resulting from comprehensive safety features.

The TEA152x needs few external components when used as a voltage source. With the addition of very few components a combined voltage and current source can be realised, says Philips. Built-in safety features include over-current, under-voltage monitoring and temperature protection, in addition to short-circuit protection. The size of the devices, combined with the low component count for a complete SM power supply, enable the construction of energy-efficient, low-cost, slim-line power plugs and supplies.

STARplug comprises two product series. The TEA152x range for global mains operation will be available in 2000 and the TEA151x for USA and Japan (115 V a.c.) will follow in early 2001.

All STARplug chips are equipped with an integral start-up current source, enabling self-starting from the rectified mains. An integrated power switch reduces the overall component count of design, and valley switching ensures a minimal amount of energy is lost during switch-on. Devices in the TEA152x series operate from supplies ranging between 90V a.c. and 276 V a.c. TEA152x devices capable of delivering 2, 3, 7, 10 and 15 W when used at global mains voltages, are available in a choice of DIP8 and SO14 packages. At the same supply voltage 10, 20 and 30 W devices are available in the DBS9P format.
