Micropower Hall-effect switch is ultra-miniature

6 April 2005 Switches, Relays & Keypads

Allegro MicroSystems Europe has introduced a new version of its A3212 micropower Hall-effect switch in the ultra-miniature MLP surface-mount package. It measures 2 x 2 mm with a nominal height of 0,5 mm.

Rated for operation over -40 to 85°C, the A3212 devices are ultra-sensitive, pole-independent, Hall-effect switches with latched digital output, and are especially suited to operation in battery-operated, handheld equipment such as cellular and cordless telephones, pagers, and palmtop computers.

Each single-chip device integrates a Hall-voltage generator, a small-signal amplifier, chopper stabilisation circuitry, a latch and a MOSFET output. A 2,5 to 3,5 V operating voltage and a unique clocking scheme are used to reduce the average operating power requirements to less than 15 μW with a 2,75 V supply.

Unlike other Hall-effect switches, the A3212 Series is pole-independent: either a north or south pole or sufficient strength will turn the output 'on'. In the absence of a magnetic field, the output is 'off'. The polarity independence with minimal power requirement allows these devices to replace reed switches for superior reliability and ease of manufacturing, while eliminating the need for signal conditioning.

The switches come in four package styles: leadless miniature low-profile surface-mount package types EH and EL; leaded low-profile SMD type LH; and UA, a three-lead SIP. Each is available in a lead (Pb) free version.
