MIP520 used in ship radar system

4 May 2005 Computer/Embedded Technology

Since 1947, CHL of the Netherlands has been involved in the design and production of special microwave applications. Its main products are high performance slotted-wave guide antenna systems.

The Artemis MK5 is the company's automatic, short range position fixing system of the range-bearing type. It combines the proven microwave antenna tracking techniques of earlier versions of the system with new state-of-the-art technology to achieve accurate and repeatable positioning under all weather conditions, using just a single reference station.

The system is an ideal position sensor for vessels and tankers with a dynamic positioning (DP) system, but also for other applications it forms a reliable positioning alternative. Especially in areas where use of satellite position fixing systems like GPS and DGPS suffer the effect of shielding, for example, in the vicinity of large structures like oil rigs and platforms, the Artemis MK5 system is very powerful.

According to the company, the reasons the MPL products were chosen were its: wide temperature range capability as the board is built in the housing of the radar; vibration and shock requirements on radar; reliability of the system was imperative; good on-board EMI protection; long term availability of the product; good support and know-how from Arcobel and MPL.
