Advantech's ADAM-4562 is a one-port isolated USB to RS232 converter. The new converter improves over its ADAM-4561 predecessor with capability to use 9-wire RS232 and get its power from the USB port. With 9-wire RS232 capability, it meets the requirements of PLCs, modems, and controller equipment. 9-wire RS232 supports not only data transfers, but also handshake functions with data and status checking. Thus equipped, it can communicate with field equipment such as PLCs, modems, and controllers.
ADAM-4562's main function is as a USB-to-serial converter. Because there are no RS232 ports supported in many new laptops, USB has become a popular alternative. Its plug-and-play support and hot-swappable functions simplify the configuration process, and it also acts as a power supply for the module. It is no longer necessary to have an external power supply.
Further, the ADAM-4562 supports isolation protection up to 2500 V d.c. Although commercial USB-to-serial converters are available, it is advisable to use a protected converter for industrial use so that surges and transients do not damage the linked computer.
