Royal Philips Electronics has announced that its 4-channel advanced 16C quad UARTs will be made available in the industry's smallest packages. Philips' smallest 4-channel quad UARTs, sized at 36 mm² in HVQFN, offer 90% space savings compared to the industry's current smallest package size of 144 mm². Philips also introduced the industry's smallest fully-functional quad UARTs in 49 mm² LQFP and LFBGA packages. The new packages offer manufacturers a simple way to reduce overall board size.
System designers widely regard UARTs as the best way to transfer data from a CPU or microcontroller to other parts of the system and they are extensively used for this purpose. Because they are easy-to-use and simplify chip design, the market demand for standalone UARTs continues to remain steady. With the introduction of these new parts, Philips claims it is the first supplier to offer a portfolio of 1-, 2- and 4-channel advanced UARTs in small packaging that benefits applications that require high speed, low voltage, low power, higher data transfer rates and multiple communication ports in a small package.
Philips is offering these new, small 4-channel UARTs in the low-power 16C 'B' versions that have broad operating ranges at 2,5, 3,3 or 5 V. They are also available in extended temperature ranges from -45 to 85°C. Their high data rate of 5 Mbps and fast bus interface speeds combined with low sleep current at about 50 μA make them an attractive solution for both high-speed and power-constrained applications.
