USB ToolStick demonstrates easy-to-use MCU development tools

30 November 2005 DSP, Micros & Memory

Silicon Laboratories has introduced the ToolStick, an intuitive, low cost way for designers to quickly and completely evaluate the company's 8-bit MCU development tools. The ToolStick evaluation platform is a fully contained evaluation system in a USB stick. The company says that through only a PC with a USB port, designers can fully experience its software development environment in conjunction with the on-chip debugging hardware that allows full, non-intrusive access to the C8051F mixed-signal MCUs' CPU, peripherals and memory. The software development environment consists of the integrated development environment (IDE), editor, debugger, Flash programmer as well as an evaluation copy of the Keil compiler.

Silicon Laboratories' C8051F mixed-signal MCUs include up to a 100 MIPS 8051 CPU, up to 128 kB Flash memory and high-precision analog peripherals in packages as small as 3 x 3 mm. The company's mixed-signal MCUs are supported by a set of easy-to-use, professional development tools that complement the on-chip debugging hardware. The simplified development environment helps reduce the costs typically associated with switching processor architectures and enables designers to quickly evaluate, design and debug their systems when using the Silicon Laboratories MCU.

The ToolStick is based on the company's industry leading F300 small form factor MCUs which interface with the PC via the integrated Silicon Laboratories USB debug adapter that uses the F321 USB MCU. Example programs are included to demonstrate the ease-of-use of the development environment and MCU. The demo allows users to view and change the contents of internal registers and memory. The user can also set breakpoints in the code or perform single stepping through disassembled code.
