Embedded computer developed for extreme environments

6 April 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

The Pentium M Packaged Industrial PC (PIP10) from MPL is a fanless, robust industrial embedded PC with long-term availability. MPL has designed the PIP10 to withstand the extended temperature requirements that many customers encounter.

The key for a successful and reliable design that works under such rigid temperature requirements, it says, is to lower the overall power consumption without compromising on other features. In addition to the lowest possible power consumption of the total design, the specific placement of the components on the board in respect of thermal issues is also key, as is the design of the housing.

The PIP10 design has been done in such a way that operation in extended temperature is possible without slowing the CPU, using fans and/or openings in the housing. The PIP concept also does not use complicated heat pipe systems or large external heatsinking.

MPL says the PIP10 is a powerful solution for industrial, marine or transportation applications and it can be used in environmental conditions from -40 up to +75°C. The PIP concept is also shock and vibration resistant, and there is also a standard solution available (0 to +60°C use) for applications and environments where temperature is not so important, although long term availability is.

The PIP10 is also available in the Panel-PIP, as an 'all-in-one' panel-PC concept, offered with 12,1" up to 19" LCDs. Housing materials offered are either in aluminium or stainless steel, completely sealed (front, side and back are IP65), and total case depth is less than 90 mm.
