UHF narrow-band transceiver modules are power thrifty

6 April 2006 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Radiometrix has introduced a narrow-band transceiver module that it claims offers a low-power, reliable data link in the company's standard transceiver pin-out and footprint. The NiM2 has good specifications that make the product highly-suited to power-frugal applications where existing single-frequency wideband UHF modules lack sufficient range. Data rates of up to 10 kbps, and distances over 500 m can be supported, it says.

The module delivers a transmit power of +10 dBm (10 mW), while its receiver sensitivity is -118 dBm (for 12 dB SINAD). Standard frequencies provided are 434,65 MHz and 434,075 MHz, but custom versions, with frequencies occupying the 433 MHz (EU licence-exempt) band are also available. Channel spacing is 25 kHz.

The transmit section consists of a frequency-modulated VCXO (voltage controlled crystal oscillator) feeding a frequency multiplier and two stage amplifier. The receive section is a double-conversion FM superhet with IF at 21,4 MHz and 455 kHz. The signal path includes a SAW-based RF filtering which give image rejection levels of 50 dB or better. The device conforms fully with both ETSI EN 300 220-3 (radio) and EN 301 489-3 (EMC) regulatory standards.

The company says that its use of effective screening and internal filtering minimises spurious radiation and susceptibility. Because of their small size and low power consumption, these modules meet the needs of battery-powered portable equipment. They can be run off a low-current 2,9 to 15 V supply.

Among the many varied system designs the modules can be integrated into, are EPOS instrumentation, bar code scanners, data loggers, industrial telemetry/telecommand, in-building environmental monitoring/control, high-end security/fire alarms, DGPS systems, and vehicle data up/download.
