Geode-based PC/104 module brings high performance operation to its product class

19 April 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

Advantech's powerful new Geode GX1-300 PC/104 CPU card, the PCM-3350, with its GX1-300 onboard processor and low power, fanless performance, represents Advantech's next generation of high speed, low power PC/104 family of products.

The stable Geode processor, onchip PCI VGA for VGA and TFT LCD support, and Intel 82559 high performance Ethernet chip, provide exceptional power and functionality, according to the company. The ability to stack a full range of PC/104 modules such as sound, PCMCIA, GPS, additional LAN, plus many others, greatly expands the range of applications. The PCM-3350 highly suited for rugged industrial applications typically associated with PC/104 boards, but with the powerful processor/system chipset, it is also well-suited for applications such as medical equipment, small Internet appliances and other embedded controllers.

Many gains were made by utilising the Geode GX1 processor in the PCM-3350 says Advantech: the GX1 processor provides the lowest power consumption and high-speed performance for any x86 processor at these performance levels. These processors also support most popular web plug-ins and leverages existing software and hardware investments.

The PCM-3350 has all the power and features indicative of larger CPU control boards, but this at the standard PC/104 size of 96 x 90 mm. An ideal upgrade for the PCM-3346 486 DX66 CPU module, it retains the exact same pin layout configuration. It has 256 KB Flash memory, a 144-pin SODIMM socket which can accept up to 128 MB SDRAM, and support for up to two EIDE devices with BIOS auto-detect, PIO Mode 3 or Mode 4 transfer, Ultra DMA33 mode (ATA-4) up to 33 MBps.

The PCM-3350 supports up to two FDDs plus one serial RS232 port and one RS232/422/485 port. There are two USB 1.0 compliant ports, one parallel port and a mini-DIN connector that supports a standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse. There is a CompactFlash socket that can act as an emulated hard-drive as well.

An 18-bit TFT LCD panel is supported with flat panel display resolution up to 1024 x 768. Along with APM 1.1 power management, an infrared port and watchdog timer support, the PCM-3350 has all the features that make it a full-featured performer in any computer class.
