Transmitter for S band air traffic control

17 May 2006 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

For many years TMD Technologies (TMD) of the UK has successfully supplied its PT6055 S band TWT (travelling wave tube) to Watchman Radar users. The Watchman radar (also known as the airfield surveillance radar) detects the movement of aircraft up to a range of almost 100 km, allowing air traffic controllers to guide aircraft to within range of their other navigational aids.

Local distributor, OEN Enterprises, says that the company has now developed and manufactured a complete transmitter subsystem - the PTX7602, which includes TWT, power supply and built-in test electronics (BITE). Several of these units are now operating successfully in the field and offer particular advantages in terms of reliability, maintainability, through life support and cost savings.

The PTX7602 comprises a TMD switched-mode power supply, interface electronics and TMD's highly reliable PT6055 coupled cavity TWT. This incorporates a long life dispenser cathode in a self-contained rack. If preferred, the customer's existing tube may be retained, in which case full, effective integration is guaranteed.

The TMD system provides low phase noise for enhanced radar performance and incorporates well established existing components. It has been designed for maximum reliability and ease of maintenance.

High electrical efficiency requires minimum cooling and provides high reliability service over a wide range of ambient conditions. The control interface of the unit allows remote operation and status monitoring, providing a number of diagnostic outputs for test purposes. Options available are long pulse versions or alternative prime power systems. Where appropriate, the unit can incorporate reverse power protection. Various alternative RF Output and RF Input configurations are available.
