Ethernet datacommunications system uses WDM to save on fibre costs

14 June 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

The ADAM-6542 from Advantech features one 100 Mbps Ethernet port and a single-strand fibre-optic interface that allows one to connect to Ethernet systems over a distance of 20 km and doing all this by using only one cable. The way that the ADAM-6542 accomplishes this, is by running two different models - the ADAM-6542/W15 and the ADAM-6542/W13.

The ADAM-6542 adopts WDM technology that increases the information carrying capacity of fibre via multiplex transmit and receive signals at different wavelengths on the single strand cable. The WDM technology is implemented in couples.

At one site the ADAM-6542/W15 is installed with transmitting channel being 1550 nm and its receiving channel 1310 nm. At the other site the ADAM6542/W13 is installed, with transmitting channel 1310 nm and reception channel 1550 nm. Both transmitting and reception channels of both units are multiplexed to a single strand cable. This saves half the cabling cost instead of using an original dual fibre converter.

The ADAM-6542 also supports integrated loop engine and embedded memory buffer that supports auto-negotiation. This stores and forwards the information to transmit the data properly.
