Windows XP Embedded can be the answer

26 July 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

If you are an embedded computing developer, have you ever encountered any of the following problems: operating system is too big; licensing cost too high; it is too hard to configure operating systems for your needs; the tools are too expensive; or, there is no support?

If you answered yes to any of these, then Windows XP Embedded could be the answer you have been looking for. Windows XP Embedded is a componentised version of Windows XP Professional. The footprint of the operating system can be reduced by removing any unneeded device drivers or operating system components. This also increases reliability and reduces the hardware requirements. Embedded computer specialist, Centurion Micro Electronics, has already installed, without any problems, Windows XPe on a 300 MHz GX-1 processor board that has only 64 MB RAM.

Win XPe also boasts a wide range of embedded-enabling features such as: El Torito support; enhance write filter; headless support and faster boot-up; and hibernate once, resume many. It enables rich embedded applications by supporting full Win32 API compliance, thus ensuring that off-the-self applications can be installed with little or no porting required. Popular compilers like Visual Studio.net (used by over 6 million developers worldwide) can be used to develop applications, which reduces the time to market.

The reduction in the footprint also enables the operating system to be booted from a solid state disk such as Compact Flash - a very reliable and robust method of storage.

Centurion Micro Electronics can install Windows XPe on any of its own supplied boards, which range from the entry level GX-1 300 MHz up to the full Pentium M or Pentium 4.
