2,4 GHz ultra-low power wireless IC solution needs few external components

6 September 2006 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The latest device in Nordic Semiconductors portfolio of 2,4 GHz wireless ICs is said to merge high speed with ultra-low power and cost. The nRF24L01 fully featured transceiver solution is claimed to enable the lowest bill of material (BOM) in any portable 2,4 GHz battery operated device. Intended for applications such as wireless desktops, intelligent sports equipment, remote control, security, toys, etc, it is also a good fit for advanced multimedia solutions like Voice over IP. This is possible through the innovative MultiCeiver solution in which on-chip hardware supports up to six simultaneous wireless devices, enabling a small network of six nodes (2 Mbps).

In terms of power consumption, this is industry-leading for 2,4 GHz coin-cell battery operated equipment - the entire solution including Link Layer and MultiCeiver logic more than doubles the battery lifetime compared to existing nRF24XX solutions from Nordic. Also, because the Enhanced ShockBurst feature incorporates the entire link layer needed for a bidirectional protocol, the need for an application MCU with high clock speed and large memory is eliminated. This further reduces the external power budget in the application.

The nRF24L01 is designed for worldwide regulatory approval. It includes a carrier sense signal that is used to detect stationary frequency systems such as WLAN. Additionally, the high speed combined with unique switching times is said to virtually eliminate any chance of collision with frequency-hopping systems such as Bluetooth.

Other features: 12,5 mA peak RX current, 2 Mbps; 11 mA peak TX current @ 0 dBm Pout, 2 Mbps; 32 µA standby current; 1,9 V to 3,6 V operation with on-chip voltage regulators; comes in 20 pin 4 x 4 mm QFN RoHS package.
