Highly integrated Cartesian loop IC supports wide range of standards

6 September 2006 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

CML's recently-introduced CMX998 Cartesian feedback loop transmitter IC provides global two-way radio manufacturers with a highly integrated solution for transmitter linearisation. With the world going digital, the need for increased data speeds and bandwidth efficiency is ever increasing. This is driving the move to more complex linear modulation schemes. The CMX998 provides a fully integrated low power solution, ideal for portable devices, says CML.

The CMX998 represents a state-of-the-art solution, covering a wide RF range from 100 MHz to 1 GHz, usable with channel bandwidths up to 150 kHz. Not only is flexibility offered, but high performance, low wide-band noise and a large degree of linearisation gain are also key features says the company.

Suited to the majority of non-constant envelope modulation systems, the CMX998 is well-suited for today's flexible, multimode software defined radio (SDR) systems. It can support a wide range of linear modulation formats and standards, including TDMA operation, TETRA mobile station power classes up to 3 W (Class-3), APCO P25, TETRA 2 terminals, aviation systems, mobile satellite terminals etc. With the CMX998 being an analog system, it will reproduce whatever modulation is presented to its I&Q inputs such as: Analog FM, PSK, QPSK, DQPSK, QAM, ODFM.

The CMX998 provides all of the functions needed to implement a Cartesian feedback loop transmitter in a two-way radio design, with the addition of an external power amplifier, coupler and fixed value feedback attenuator. Acting as a direct conversion quadrature mixer from I and Q to RF output, it provides the capability to linearise the PA via a feedback from the PA's output. Included are forward and feedback paths; local oscillator circuitry including loop phase control; instability and error detectors along with uncommitted op-amps for input signal conditioning.

The CMX998 integrated IC solution operates at 3 V and comes in a 64-pin VQFN package with an added thermal ground pad to aid thermal performance. An evaluation kit (EV9980) and support tools are also available.
