The new u-blox 5 GPS chips feature an acquisition performance of under 1 second, -160 dBm acquisition and tracking sensitivity, power needs of less than 50 mW, and a footprint smaller than 100 mm², making them ideal for PDAs, personal navigation devices, cameras, cellphones, media players and other portable devices. The ultra-fast acquisition time of u-blox 5 is due to its 50-channel GPS architecture with over 1 million correlators and separate acquisition and tracking engines. u-blox 5 has a fractional N clock synthesiser that supports the common cellphone reference frequencies. A built-in power management unit features a DC-DC converter that optimises power use across a single voltage source. The Galileo-capable u-blox 5 GPS receivers come in single chip and chipset packages. The highly integrated architecture keeps costs to a minimum by reducing the BOM to as few as 17 passive external components. The UBX-G5010 single chip has a 56-pin QFN package that measures a mere 8 x 8 mm. Customers who prefer an optional Flash memory can combine the 9 x 9 mm UBX-G5000 100-pin BGA baseband chip and the 4 x 4 mm UBX-G0010 24-pin QFN RF front-end. Both support passive antennas with their integrated low-noise amplifiers.
