The new A8494 from Allegro MicroSystems Europe is a fixed off-time, current-mode-controlled, buck switching regulator IC that combines a 3 A current rating with a wide input voltage range of 8 V to 50 V in a small surface-mount package.
The wide input voltage range makes the new device suitable for a wide range of industrial and consumer applications, including uninterruptible power supplies, 12 V lighter-powered applications such as portable DVD players, automotive 12 V or 24 V input applications with higher voltage protection, point-of-sale equipment, and industrial systems based on 24 V or 36 V buses.
The regulator requires no external clamping diode, inductor and filter capacitor, and the 'off' time is determined by an external resistor. It will operate in both continuous and discontinuous modes. An integrated DMOS switch means that no external FET is needed.
An internal blanking circuit is used to filter out transients caused by the reverse recovery of the external clamp diode. Typical blanking time is 200 ns, and the output voltage is adjustable from 0,8 V to 24 V using a resistor divider and the 0,8 V (±3%) reference.
The device exhibits a minimal change in efficiency across its full operating range, and has a low shutdown current to minimise power drain and extend battery life. The A8498 comes in a low-profile eSOIC-8L surface-mount package with exposed pad.
