Small size SBC especially designed for harsh environments

29 November 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

A powerful single board processor solution with FPU (floating point unit) is being offered by MPL that is focused on markets with requirements like small size, wide temperature range and ruggedness. The new MIP470 is also being offered with conformal coating and for use in extended temperatures.

The MIP470 is based around the sophisticated embedded Freescale MPC8347 PowerPC processor. The product offers: two x Gigabit Ethernet, two x E-IDE port (44-pin), four x serial ports, two x USB2.0 and a realtime clock. Additionally the SBC can be equipped with on-board soldered ECC SDRAM up to 512 MB and up to 64 MB Flash. Additional memory like Flash or HDD can be added via the IDE connectors. As a further special feature, the board comes with a multipurpose socket allowing for the installation of SRAM, FLASH or EPROM. Functional expansion can be realised with PC/104-Plus or PCI-104 boards.

The MIP470 is being supplied with the Open Source 'U-Boot' bootloader, providing various boot sources like Ethernet, IDE, FLASH. Additionally, an MPL Embedded Linux distribution and development chain is available. Realtime BSPs are under development.

The MIP470 is intended and designed for use in hard environments and even in extended temperatures without the need of a fan. Special efforts have been taken in the selection of quality components and their long-term availability as well as on the low power consumption of the system - less than 6,5 W at 400 MHz.

With these features the MIP470 is well suited for many embedded control applications requiring small size, high computing performance and low power consumption. Additionally the board is intended to be used in rugged, harsh and even moist environments, for example: airborne and transportation systems, military, industrial or secure applications.
