Space-saving 120 W external power supply for medical applications

29 November 2006 Power Electronics / Power Management

XP Power offers a medically-approved, compact 120 W power supply for medical and other portable applications where high isolation and low leakage current specifications are required.

The AMM120 is offered with both Class I (with earth) and Class II (no earth) AC inputs. Class II inputs are commonly required in medical equipment because the reliability of earth connections cannot be guaranteed in all locations in which portable devices may be used. This is driving a growing demand for Class II qualified power supplies. Qualification of the AMM120 means that users are not required to further test or qualify the power portion of their systems, saving time and expense.

The power supply measures 160 x 76,2 x 43,7 mm and is one of the most powerful external units currently available with medical approvals. It has a universal AC input and delivers a single output of 12, 15, 18, 19, 20, 24, 30, 36 or 48 V d.c. at 85% typical efficiency under full load. Waste heat is minimised avoiding the need for a fan, this also makes it silent and maintenance-free. The AMM120 operates at full power at up to 40°C and at least 50% power at 60°C.

The AMM120 needs no minimum load and has better than ±5% total regulation. Ripple and noise are limited to 2% maximum. Overvoltage, overtemperature, overload and short circuit protection are included. Auto-recovery is provided in the case of overload. The power supply meets all major international safety and EMC specifications for medical applications. MTBF is greater than 175 000 hours.
