UHF radio packet modem targets both US and European markets

24 January 2007 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The RPM3 UHF Radio Packet Modem from Radiometrix is an intelligent wireless serial cable replacement that enables a two-way radio data link to be simply and quickly implemented between a number of serial devices at baud rates from 600 bps to 115200 bps. It is particularly useful for OEMs who require operation at both the 869,85 MHz (European), and 914,50 MHz (North American) frequency options. European OEMs incorporating an RPM3-869-17 into their products can export to the United States by simply swopping to the RPM3-914-17 without any PCB modification, and vice-versa.

The European version conforms to the ETSI EN 300 220-3, and EN 301 489-3, and to FCC Part 15.249 respectively, enabling manufacturers to get CE and FCC certification easily for their finished product. The modules ensure that data integrity is maintained by using an addressable data-packeting mechanism; with error checking, packet acknowledgement and retransmission. In this way, a reliable, transparent, wireless data link with 100% duty cycle over a usable range up to 200 m is achieved.

The compact module (which measures just 39 x 23 x 10 mm) is a self-contained radio modem module that requires only a simple antenna, 5/3 V supply, and a serial I/O port (UART) on a host microcontroller or PC. Designed for ease of use and rapid installation, the modem has many advanced in-built features which enable point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and broadcast mode networks to be established easily. Remote configuration facilitates post installation set-up.

The applications covered by the RPM3 span a broad spectrum. They include telemetry/telecontrol, EPOS equipment, barcode scanners, belt clip printers, stock control, job allocation systems, and remote data acquisition/data loggers. In-building environmental monitoring and control systems can also benefit from its features, as could high-end security and alarm signalling, automated monitoring/control systems, and fleet management. It is also suitable for vehicle data acquisition systems.
