Ultra-rugged field PC offers portability and versatility

7 March 2007 Computer/Embedded Technology

Juniper Systems, a manufacturer of ultra-rugged handheld field computers, has introduced the Archer Field PC, a new addition to its mobile product line. The Archer runs MS Windows Mobile Version 5.0 and is powered by the Intel XScale 520 MHz processor.

Archer's durability in extreme environments and its compact size (it weighs less than 500 g) make it a good choice for those in need of a pocket-sized field PC for rugged applications. It can be used to document, navigate, communicate, search, and share information.

The Archer computing device meets IP67 and Mil-Std-810F standards for drop, vibration, immersion, humidity, and operating temperatures. Its case is made of sturdy, lightweight magnesium and features an easy-to-grip over-moulding. Its colour display offers superior visibility even in bright lighting conditions, while the large, tough, backlit keys are optimised for outdoor use. The rechargeable Li-ion battery operates for more than 20 hours on one charge and recharges in 4 hours or less, according to Juniper; intelligence within the battery provides accurate charge status to the user at all times.

The Communications Module provides USB host and client plus 9-pin RS232 for use with peripheral devices. User accessible, sealed CF and SD card slots can accommodate a camera, GPS receiver, bar code scanner, Bluetooth or data storage cards. Wireless communication is possible via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular modem cards.

Mobile applications included are Office Mobile featuring Excel Mobile and Word Mobile, Outlook Mobile, and Internet Explorer Mobile. These programs allow seamless synchronisation of files, tasks, and appointments with an office PC. Voice recorder and voice command software are also included. The Archer runs off-the-shelf applications written for Windows Mobile devices.
