1-chip transceiver supports eight UMTS bands, four EDGE bands

Wireless technology developer Qualcomm has announced a single-chip UMTS CMOS transceiver designed to enable more affordable 3G devices. The RTR6280 transceiver provides global roaming capabilities with multiband UMTS and quad-band EDGE. The new device, as well as the company's recently sampled RTR6285 transceiver, which features the RTR6280's functionality with the addition of receive diversity and GPS, is said to be the world's smallest dual-mode transceiver with multiband UMTS and quad-band EDGE. The RTR6280 supports a variety of band combinations: Japanese triple-band UMTS (bands 1, 6, 9); European emerging dual-band UMTS (bands 1, 8); Chinese and rest-of-world single and dual-band UMTS (bands 1, 3,); Global GSM and EDGE (800/900/1800/1900 MHz).
