Sunlight readable TFT LCD monitors

4 April 2007 Computer/Embedded Technology

With many applications and projects needing LCD monitors used outside in strong South African sunlight, the sunlight readable monitor (SRM) from IEI Technology will be the ultimate solution. According to local distibutor, Centurion Micro Electronics, with typical LCD monitors only producing 300 cd/m², the SRM's 800-1000 cd/m² allows it to be easily seen in strong sunlight. Typical high brightness monitors usually use more than six backlights, but IEI's SRM monitors have only four superhigh-brightness fluorescent tubes. This technology makes the SRM more economical in power and also produces less heat, which increases the mean time before failure (MTBF) to 50 000 hrs.

As these SRM monitors are usually used in strong sunlight conditions, temperature is obviously also a concern. The SRM monitors have a wide operating temperature range of -10 to +60°C in order to accommodate a diverse range of industrial applications such as outdoor kiosks during SA's hot, bright summers. Outdoor applications in daylight or other bright environments require technology that can suppress surface reflection. These monitors have a special anti-reflection surface treatment to prevent reflection. The SRM series comes in a 12,1" and 15" size made from aluminium and the front panel protection is IP65-rated.

There is also an optional input range of +9 V d.c. to +36 V d.c. for vehicle applications. An embedded touchscreen is also optional.
