ESD-protected RS485/422 transceivers with high noise immunity

4 April 2007 Power Electronics / Power Management Information Security

Intersil's ISL315XE series of ICs are BiCMOS, IEC61000 ESD-protected, 5 V powered, single transceivers that meet both the RS485 and RS422 standards for balanced communication. Each driver output and receiver input is protected against ±16,5 kV ESD strikes without latch-up. The device's transmitters can deliver exceptional differential output voltages (2,4 V min) into the RS485 required 54 Ω load for better noise immunity or to allow up to eight 120 Ω terminations in 'star' or other non-standard bus topologies. These devices have very low bus currents (+125 μA/-75 μA), so they present a true 1/8 unit load to the RS485 bus. This allows up to 256 transceivers on the network without violating the RS485 specification's 32 unit load maximum, and without using repeaters. The receiver inputs feature a 'Full Fail-Safe' design, which ensures a logic high output if Rx inputs are floating, shorted, or on a terminated but undriven bus. Rx outputs have high drive levels - 28 mA, VOL = 1 V, to ease the design of optocoupled isolated interfaces. They come in MSOP packages.
