Wireless LAN solutions for industrial applications

Funkwerk Enterprise Communications’ (FEC) WI series comprises a range of robust devices to set up and run WLANs for rugged industrial environments or for applications with special requirements such as hospitals or public transport. The devices of the ruggedised WI series are optimised for operation under rough conditions, in outdoor areas or polluted areas. They support the latest WLAN technology.

Depending on the model, the access points are equipped with one, two, or three dual-band radio modules. The operating mode of each radio can be chosen individually between AP and bridge mode.

When using data of different applications it is important to prioritise some of them. The WI1002 series supports WMM wireless multimedia) a technique to prioritise certain data of applications such as video or voice, in order to provide maximum transmission quality for time-critical applications.

In addition to the WLAN standards 802.11b and 802.11g, these devices also support 802.11a as well as its European counterpart, the 802.11h. This is particularly advisable for building bridge solutions in outdoor areas. Furthermore, these products also support modem processes as multi-SSID and VLAN, with which up to 16 virtual access points can be mapped per radio module.

To ensure highest security, the devices support the 802.1x and 802.11i (WPA2) security standards. The system can be reliably configured using SSH, SSL or alternatively via https as well. When used as bridges, the devices support the automatic bridge mode and are able to secure bridge connections with the help of TKP and AES encryption.

The WI series also offers 2 x 1/100 Mbps Ethernet, an SFP slot for fibre, a relay output (alarm), 3-way redundant power supply capability (2 x 24 V + PoE), and two or four detachable antennas for flexible antenna solutions.

Protected against dust and water to IP Class IP40 to IP65 the WI series can operate in a broad temperature range of -25 to 70°C without requiring heating/cooling. They are approved for healthcare, railway and vehicle applications.

Software features are: MultiSSID (up to 16 virtual WLANs); VLAN; 5 GHz bandscan at defined time intervals; realtime clock; SMNP V1,2,3; and easy basic configuration via ComPoint Manager.
