High performance PCI slot PC cards

18 April 2007 Computer/Embedded Technology

Advantech's PCI-6880 and PCI-6881 are two half-size PCI-bus slot PC cards that offer strong processing power along with fanless operation, low power consumption and superior graphics support.

These cards feature Intel Pentium M or Intel Celeron M processors with an Intel 855GME and Intel 6300ESB or Intel ICH4 (for the PCI-6881) South Bridge I/O controller hub (ICH). These Intel platforms support ECC DDR 200/266/333 memory up to 2 GB and feature a low power design and integrated graphics solution with a 400 MHz system bus and integrated 32-bit 3D core at 133 MHz to offer good graphics performance and scalability.

The PCI-6880 adds additional support for dual SATA and DVI. Both solutions follow the standard half-size PCI slot PC form factor making them suited for a half-size chassis solution while operating in a high vibration or harsh operating environment.

The PCI-6880 and PCI-6881 both support Pentium M and Celeron M processors up to 2,0 GHz with 400 MHz FSB. These solutions offer high performance and feature expansion for a wide range of high end embedded applications that include measurement equipment, communication appliances, virtual private networking, firewall devices, industrial control, transportation systems etc. Because the boards are much smaller than full-size cards, they can be used in more applications where space is limited.

PCI-6880 supports a dual SATA interface with data transfer rates up to 150 MB/s. Serial ATA replaces the Parallel ATA physical storage interface. Users of Serial ATA benefit from greater speeds, simpler storage upgrade and easier configuration. The PCI-6880 supports DVI displays up to UXGA resolution.

Both systems support a wide array of I/O devices for communication with peripherals, networked systems and specialised devices. Onboard I/Os include 10/100 Base-T Ethernet and 1000Base-T. Also, two EIDEs, one FDD, one parallel port, four USB 2.0 ports, four serial ports PS/2 keyboard/mouse, watchdog, and a DI/O interface. SSD support is provided for Type I/II CompactFlash cards.

The 855GME supports a VGA/LVDS interface, two channel (18-bit) LVDS panel and DVI interface (PCI-6880 only) and support for dual display. It also supports AC'97 audio with the addition of a PCM-231A-00A1 audio module (optional). Both solutions support AT and ATX power supplies.
